Summary: This inscription is dated in the 4th year of the reign of Rājēndra-Chōḷa I. Īrāyiravaṉ Pallavayaṉ (l. 4 f.), an officer of his who is known from several other inscriptions,¹ had built a shrine which he called Rājarājēśvara² (l. 11 f. and l. 16 f.), and which is apparently identical with the shrine on which the inscription is engraved. For maintaining two lamps in this shrine, he purchased for 50 kāśu from the inhabitants of Tiruvallam a piece of land which measured 2,000 kuḻi, and which received the name Araiśūr-vāḍagai (l. 15 f.) with an allusion to his native village of Araiśūr (l. 3 f.).

(Line 1.) Hail ! Prosperity ! In the 4th year (of the reign) of king Parakēsarivarman, alias Śrī-Rājēndra-Śōḻadēva. The hand-writing of us, the assembly of Tīkkāli-Vallam in Mīyāṟu-nāḍu, (a subdivision) of Paḍuvūr-kōṭṭam, (a district) of Jayaṅkoṇḍa-Śōḻa-maṇḍalam.

(L.2.) We have received 50 kāśu, (which were) good (i.e. of full weight) (and) current at the time, from the hand of Īrāyiravaṉ Pallavayaṉ, alias Uttama-Śōḻa-Pallavar(ai)yaṉ,³ a Perundaram⁴ of the lord Śrī-Rājēndra-Chōḷadēva (and) the lord of Ar[ai]śūr in Pāmbuṇi-kūṟṟam, (a district) of Nittavinōda-vaḷanāḍu.

(L. 9.) For these fifty kāśu we sold the following land by a deed of sale to (the god) Chaṇḍēśvaradēva (of the shrine) of Rājarājēśvaram-uḍaiyār, which he had caused to be built in the temple of Tiruvallam-uḍaiyār in our city. (L. 14.) The eastern boundary of the land, which we assigned for two sacred perpetual lamps to (the shrine of) Rājarājēśvaram-uḍaiyār in Araiśūr-vāḍagai, a hamlet (belonging) to us in the west of this city, (is) to the west of the high-road of Jananātha; the southern boundary (is) to the north of the land of Kuṭṭēṟa-Bhaṭṭa-Sōmayājiyār of Aṅgārai; the western boundary (is) to the east of the land of Kuṭṭēṟa-Bhaṭṭa-Sōmayājiyār of Aṅgārai and of Śaṁkara-Kramavittaṉ of Kuṇḍūr, including a cocoanut garden; and the northern boundary (is) to the south of the land of Āditta-Perumāṉ Śōmāśi (i.e. Sōmayājin) of Ālikkoṉṟai and of (the channel called) Kayakkāl, alias Pallavaiya-peruvāykkāl.⁵

(L. 37.) We sold and gave by a deed of sale—including (eventual) excess or deficiency in measurement—the whole land within these four boundaries, (which measures), together with the cocoanut garden, two thousand kuḻi by the rod of Śiṟṟambalam.⁶

(L. 45.) This very (sum)⁷ being the purchase-money and the tax-money (due) for this (land), we thus sold (it) and gave (it) free of taxes.

(L. 48.) We shall not be entitled to claim the high-level water, the wells, the price paid for water, the gold of ugappār,⁸ and any other tax paid by the city (and) previously (due) from this land.

(L. 50.) Thus we, the assembly of Tīkkāli-Vallam, sold (it) free of taxes and gave (it) by a deed of sale. Those who obstruct this charity, shall incur (all) the sins committed between the Gaṅgā and Kanyā. This (charity is placed under) the protection of all Māhēśvaras.

<p>(Line 1.) Hail ! Prosperity ! In the 4th year (<hi rend="italic">of the reign</hi>) of king <hi rend="bold">Parakēsarivarman</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Śrī-Rājēndra-Śōḻadēva</hi>. The hand-writing of us, the assembly of <hi rend="bold">Tīkkāli-Vallam</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Mīyāṟu-nāḍu</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">a subdivision</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Paḍuvūr-kōṭṭam</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">a district</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Jayaṅkoṇḍa-Śōḻa-maṇḍalam</hi>.</p>

<p>(L.2.) We have received 50 <hi rend="italic">kāśu</hi>, (which were) good (<hi rend="italic">i.e.</hi> of full weight) (<hi rend="italic">and</hi>) current at the time, from the hand of <hi rend="bold">Īrāyiravaṉ Pallavayaṉ</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Uttama-Śōḻa-Pallavar<unclear>ai</unclear>yaṉ</hi>,<note>Compare above, Vol. II. p. 222, note 4.</note> a <hi rend="italic">Perundaram</hi><note>See above, Vol. II. p. 141, note 1.</note> of the lord <hi rend="bold">Śrī-Rājēndra-Chōḷadēva</hi> (<hi rend="italic">and</hi>) the lord of <hi rend="bold">Ar[ai]śūr</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Pāmbuṇi-kūṟṟam</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">a district</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Nittavinōda-vaḷanāḍu</hi>.</p>

<p>(L. 9.) For these fifty <hi rend="italic">kāśu</hi> we sold the following land by a deed of sale to (<hi rend="italic">the god</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Chaṇḍēśvaradēva</hi> (<hi rend="italic">of the shrine</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Rājarājēśvaram-uḍaiyār</hi>, which he had caused to be built in the temple of <hi rend="bold">Tiruvallam-uḍaiyār</hi> in our city. (L. 14.) The eastern boundary of the land, which we assigned for two sacred perpetual lamps to (<hi rend="italic">the shrine of</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Rājarājēśvaram-uḍaiyār</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Araiśūr-vāḍagai</hi>, a hamlet (<hi rend="italic">belonging</hi>) to us in the west of this city, (<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the west of the high-road of <hi rend="bold">Jananātha</hi>; the southern boundary (<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the north of the land of <hi rend="bold">Kuṭṭēṟa-Bhaṭṭa-Sōmayājiyār</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Aṅgārai</hi>; the western boundary (<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the east of the land of <hi rend="bold">Kuṭṭēṟa-Bhaṭṭa-Sōmayājiyār</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Aṅgārai</hi> and of <hi rend="bold">Śaṁkara-Kramavittaṉ</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Kuṇḍūr</hi>, including a cocoanut garden; and the northern boundary (<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the south of the land of <hi rend="bold">Āditta-Perumāṉ Śōmāśi</hi> (<hi rend="italic">i.e.</hi> Sōmayājin) of <hi rend="bold">Ālikkoṉṟai</hi> and of (the channel called) <hi rend="italic">Kayakkāl</hi>, alias <hi rend="italic">Pallavaiya-peruvāykkāl</hi>.<note>The second name of this channel is derived from Pallavayaṉ, the name of the donor.</note></p>

<p>(L. 37.) We sold and gave by a deed of sale—including (<hi rend="italic">eventual</hi>) excess or deficiency in measurement—the whole land within these four boundaries, (<hi rend="italic">which measures</hi>), together with the cocoanut garden, two thousand <hi rend="italic">kuḻi</hi> by the rod of <hi rend="bold">Śiṟṟambalam</hi>.<note>See above, p. 30, note 3.</note> </p>

<p>(L. 45.) This very (<hi rend="italic">sum)</hi><note>This refers to the sum of 50 <hi rend="italic">kāśu</hi> in text line 8 f.</note> being the purchase-money and the tax-money (<hi rend="italic">due</hi>) for this (<hi rend="italic">land</hi>), we thus sold (<hi rend="italic">it</hi>) and gave (<hi rend="italic">it</hi>) free of taxes.</p>

<p>(L. 48.) We shall not be entitled to claim the high-level water, the wells, the price paid for water, the gold of <hi rend="italic">ugappār,</hi><note>Compare the obscure term <hi rend="italic">ugavai</hi>, above, p. 48, note 9.</note> and any other tax paid by the city (<hi rend="italic">and</hi>) previously (<hi rend="italic">due</hi>) from this land.</p>

<p>(L. 50.) Thus we, the assembly of <hi rend="bold">Tīkkāli-Vallam</hi>, sold (<hi rend="italic">it</hi>) free of taxes and gave (<hi rend="italic">it</hi>) by a deed of sale. Those who obstruct this charity, shall incur (<hi rend="italic">all</hi>) the sins committed between the <hi rend="bold">Gaṅgā</hi> and <hi rend="bold">Kanyā</hi>. This (<hi rend="italic">charity is placed under</hi>) the protection of all <hi rend="italic">Māhēśvaras</hi>.</p>
