35 <p>This inscription is dated in the 4th year of the reign of <hi rend="bold">Rājēndra-Chōḷa</hi> I. <hi rend="bold">Īrāyiravaṉ Pallavayaṉ</hi> (l. 4 f.), an officer of his who is known from several other inscriptions,<note>See above, p. 29 and note 3.</note> had built a shrine which he called <hi rend="bold">Rājarājēśvara</hi><note>The same was the name of the great temple at Tañjāvūr, which had been built by Rājarāja I.; see above, Vol. II. p. 1.</note> (l. 11 f. and l. 16 f.), and which is apparently identical with the shrine on which the inscription is engraved. For maintaining two lamps in this shrine, he purchased for 50 <hi rend="italic">kāśu</hi> from the inhabitants of Tiruvallam a piece of land which measured 2,000 <hi rend="italic">kuḻi</hi>, and which received the name <hi rend="bold">Araiśūr-vāḍagai</hi> (l. 15 f.) with an allusion to his native village of <hi rend="bold">Araiśūr</hi> (l. 3 f.).</p>

The hand-writing of us, the assembly of <hi rend="bold">Tīkkāli-Vallam</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Mīyāṟu-nāḍu</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">a subdivision</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Paḍuvūr-kōṭṭam</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">a district</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Jayaṅkoṇḍa-Śōḻa-maṇḍalam</hi>.</p>

For these fifty <hi rend="italic">kāśu</hi> we sold the following land by a deed of sale to (<hi rend="italic">the god</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Chaṇḍēśvaradēva</hi> (<hi rend="italic">of the shrine</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Rājarājēśvaram-uḍaiyār</hi>, which he had caused to be built in the temple of <hi rend="bold">Tiruvallam-uḍaiyār</hi> in our city. (L. 14.) The eastern boundary of the land, which we assigned for two sacred perpetual lamps to (<hi rend="italic">the shrine of</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Rājarājēśvaram-uḍaiyār</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Araiśūr-vāḍagai</hi>, a hamlet (<hi rend="italic">belonging</hi>) to us in the west of this city, (<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the west of the high-road of <hi rend="bold">Jananātha</hi>; the southern boundary (<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the north of the land of <hi rend="bold">Kuṭṭēṟa-Bhaṭṭa-Sōmayājiyār</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Aṅgārai</hi>; the western boundary (<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the east of the land of <hi rend="bold">Kuṭṭēṟa-Bhaṭṭa-Sōmayājiyār</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Aṅgārai</hi> and of <hi rend="bold">Śaṁkara-Kramavittaṉ</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Kuṇḍūr</hi>, including a cocoanut garden; and the northern boundary (<hi rend="italic">is</hi>) to the south of the land of <hi rend="bold">Āditta-Perumāṉ Śōmāśi</hi> (<hi rend="italic">i.e.</hi> Sōmayājin) of <hi rend="bold">Ālikkoṉṟai</hi> and of (the channel called) <hi rend="italic">Kayakkāl</hi>, alias <hi rend="italic">Pallavaiya-peruvāykkāl</hi>.<note>The second name of this channel is derived from Pallavayaṉ, the name of the donor.</note></p>

We sold and gave by a deed of sale—including (<hi rend="italic">eventual</hi>) excess or deficiency in measurement—the whole land within these four boundaries, (<hi rend="italic">which measures</hi>), together with the cocoanut garden, two thousand <hi rend="italic">kuḻi</hi> by the rod of <hi rend="bold">Śiṟṟambalam</hi>.<note>See above, p. 30, note 3.</note> </p>

· <p>(L. 50.) Thus we, the assembly of <hi rend="bold">Tīkkāli-Vallam</hi>, sold (<hi rend="italic">it</hi>) free of taxes and gave (<hi rend="italic">it</hi>) by a deed of sale. Those who obstruct this charity, shall incur (<hi rend="italic">all</hi>) the sins committed between the <hi rend="bold">Gaṅgā</hi> and <hi rend="bold">Kanyā</hi>. This (<hi rend="italic">charity is placed under</hi>) the protection of all <hi rend="italic">Māhēśvaras</hi>.</p>
