35 <p>This inscription is dated during the reign of <hi rend="bold">Veṅkaṭapati-deva-mahārāyar</hi><note>This is <hi rend="bold">Veṅkaṭa</hi> I. of <hi rend="bold">Karṇāṭa</hi>, whose grants range between Śaka 1508 and 1535; see <hi rend="italic">Indian Antiquary</hi>, Vol. XIII. p. 155.</note> and in the <hi rend="italic">Nandana</hi> year, which was current after the expiration of the Śaka year 1514. It records that <hi rend="bold">Periya-Eṟama-nāyaka</hi> of <hi rend="bold">Puṉṉāṟṟūr</hi> granted a house (<hi rend="italic">maṉai</hi>) and some land for a <hi rend="italic">maṭha</hi> to <hi rend="bold">Ānanda-Namaśivāya-paṇḍāram</hi>. The grant was made at the <hi rend="bold">Mārgasahāyeśvara</hi> Temple of <hi rend="bold">Tiru-Viriñchapuram</hi> (<hi rend="italic">Viriñchipuram</hi>).</p>

115 <p>Hail! On the 6th solar day of the month of <hi rend="italic">Tai</hi> of the <hi rend="italic">Nandana</hi> year, which was current after the Śaka year 1514 (<hi rend="italic">had passed</hi>), while the illustrious <hi rend="italic">mahāmaṇḍaleśvara</hi>, the hero (<hi rend="italic">Gaṇḍa</hi>), the dagger (<hi rend="italic">Kaṭṭāri</hi>), the hawk (<hi rend="italic">Sāḷuva</hi>), the illustrious <hi rend="bold">Veṅkaṭapati-devamahārāyar</hi> was pleased to rule the earth,—in the presence of (<hi rend="italic">the god</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Mārgasahāyeśvara</hi> (<hi rend="italic">of</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Tiru-Viriñchapuram,—Periya-Eṟama-nāyaka</hi> (<hi rend="italic">of</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Puṉṉāṟṟūr</hi> ordered a house (<hi rend="italic">maṉai</hi>) on the northern side of the holy street (<hi rend="italic">tiru-vīthi</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Vāṇḍarāyaṉ</hi> (<hi rend="italic">to be given for</hi>) a <hi rend="italic">maṭha</hi> to <hi rend="bold">Ānanda-Namaśivāya-paṇḍāram</hi>, the worshipper (<hi rend="italic">i.e.</hi>, pupil ?) of the <hi rend="italic">guru</hi> <hi rend="bold">Namaśivāya-mūrti</hi> (<hi rend="italic">of</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Chidambaram</hi>, in order to procure religious merit to <hi rend="bold">Śaṁkarappa-nāyaka Ayaṉ</hi>, the son of <hi rend="bold">Māya (?)-nāyaka</hi> (<hi rend="italic">of</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Velūr</hi>. This house for the <hi rend="italic">maṭha</hi> consists of 1 house to the east of the house of <hi rend="bold">Tryambaka</hi> and to the west of the house of <hi rend="bold">Mūrti-māṇikkam</hi>, and of a house-garden of 41 feet. To this meritorious gift of a <hi rend="italic">maṭha</hi> we gave, with a libation of water, for each day a <hi rend="italic">kuṟuṇi</hi><note>A dry-measure equal to a <hi rend="italic">marakkāl</hi>.</note> of rice (<hi rend="italic">? prasāda</hi>) under mortgage,<note>It appears that the land mentioned below was mortgaged to the <hi rend="italic">maṭha</hi> as a guarantee for the regular supply of the rice.</note> and the connexion under mortgage with (<hi rend="italic">a piece of</hi>) land in the <hi rend="italic">agrahāra (of</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Ūṟaṇḍaṉ-tāṅgal</hi>. The succession of sons (<hi rend="italic">which consists of</hi>) the succession of pupils<note>This clause seems to imply, that the <hi rend="italic">maṭha</hi> was to be inherited by the <hi rend="italic">śishyas</hi> of the donee, just as in other cases a grant to a <hi rend="italic">Brāhmaṇa</hi> is successively enjoyed by his sons, grandsons and further descendants.</note> shall enjoy this <hi rend="italic">maṭha</hi> as long as the moon and the sun endure. Whosoever injures this meritorious gift of a <hi rend="italic">maṭha</hi>, that man shall incur the sin of one who has killed a black cow on the bank of the <hi rend="bold">Gaṅgā</hi>.</p>
