35                            <p>This inscription is dated in the reign of the <hi rend="italic">mahāmaṇḍaleśvara</hi> <hi rend="bold">Vīrapratāpa-Devarāya-mahārāya</hi> (<hi rend="italic">of</hi> Vijayanagara) and in Śaka 1353, the <hi rend="italic">Sādhāraṇa</hi> year. It records that the family (<hi rend="italic">kuḍi</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Māraṇaṉ-uḷḷiṭṭār</hi>, which belonged to <hi rend="bold">Pallava-nallūr</hi>, was given to the temple at <hi rend="bold">Teḷḷaiyūr</hi> (<hi rend="italic">the modern</hi> Teḷḷūr), <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Pukkaḷappuram</hi>, which belonged to <hi rend="bold">Vaḍapuri-Āndi-nāḍu</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Paṅgaḷa-nāḍu</hi>, a division of <hi rend="bold">Paḍuvūr-koṭṭam</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Jayaṅkoṇḍa-Choḷa-maṇḍalam</hi>.</p>

On the day of (<hi rend="italic">the nakshatra) Tiruvoṇam,</hi><note>Sanskrit <hi rend="italic">Śravaṇa</hi>.</note>which corresponds to Monday, the fifth lunar day of the former half of the month of <hi rend="italic">Karkaṭaka</hi> of the <hi rend="italic">Sādhāraṇa</hi> year (<hi rend="italic">and</hi>) the Śaka year 1353, while the illustrious <hi rend="italic">mahāmaṇḍaleśvara</hi>, the conqueror of hostile kings, the destroyer of those kings who break their word, the lord of the eastern, southern, western and northern occans, the illustrious <hi rend="bold">Vīrapratāpa-Devarāya-mahārāya</hi> was pleased to rule the earth,—Whereas (<hi rend="italic">we),<note>The names of the donors seem to have been contained in the break of line 1a of the south wall.</note> . . . . . . . . . . </hi> gave a <hi rend="italic">dharmaśāsana</hi> to (<hi rend="italic">the temple of</hi>) the lord of <hi rend="bold">Teḷḷaiyūr</hi>, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> <hi rend="bold">Pukkaḷappuram</hi>, a village in <hi rend="bold">Vaḍapuri-Āndi-nāḍu</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">which belongs</hi>) to <hi rend="bold">Paṅgaḷa-nāḍu</hi>, (<hi rend="italic">a division</hi>) of <hi rend="bold">Paḍuvūr-koṭṭam</hi> in <hi rend="bold">Jayaṅkoṇḍa-Śoṛa-maṇḍalam</hi>; —We (<hi rend="italic">hereby declare, that we</hi>) gave to this lord the family (<hi rend="italic">called</hi>) <hi rend="bold">Māraṇaṉ-uḷḷiṭṭār</hi>, which belongs to <hi rend="bold">Pallava-nallūr</hi>, as a family (<hi rend="italic">which has to maintain</hi>) a <hi rend="italic">tirunandā</hi> lamp, with a libation of water, as a meritorious gift, to last as long as the moon and the sun. These <hi rend="bold">Māraṇaṉ-uḷḷiṭṭār</hi>, who were thus given, shall attend to (<hi rend="italic">the worship of</hi>) this lord, wherever they are. The whole family (<hi rend="italic">named in</hi>) this <hi rend="italic">dharmaśāsana, (together with</hi>) their descendants, shall be the family of this lord. If there is anybody who injures this <hi rend="italic">dharmaśāsana</hi>, which was thus given, he shall incur the sin of one who has killed a tawny cow on the bank of the <hi rend="bold">Gaṅgā</hi>. Let <hi rend="bold">Maheśvara</hi> be the protector!</p>
