Commentary
Krishnamacharlu and Laksminarayan Rao 1952 date the characters on the first and third pillars to the 8th century, those on the second pillar to the 7th century; read the text of the first pillar as mentioning Śariputra, the student of Buddhavarman; note that the names Śāriputra, Buddhavarman and Cāntamati may be considered Jaina or Buddhist.
Śariputra is indeed a disciple of the Buddha. The latter who would be designated here as Buddhavarman. Pallava kings named Buddhavarman appear in genealogies of earlier charters (see IR 4, IR 5, IR 14). Mahendra could refer here to Mahendravarman I Pallava.
