Apparatus

⟨1⟩ v(ā)siṭh(ī)putasa ⬦ v[ā]s[ī]ṭh[i]pu(tasa) N+vH. — ⟨1⟩ s(i)ris(ā)dakaṇi(sa)s(i)r(i) sadakan(i)[sa] N+vH. — ⟨1⟩ (sa)va(cha)r(e)[savacha]r(a) N+vH. — ⟨1⟩ gi(mh)āṇa ⬦ gi(mh)āna N+vH. — ⟨1⟩ sama(ṇe)na ⬦ sama(l)[e]ṇa N+vH • The editors’ comparison, to argue against the reading ṇe of the third akṣara in Poonacha 2011, of the akṣara with lo in l. 2 is not convincing. — ⟨1⟩ U(j)ukā patā ⬦ U(d)uk(o)pat(o) N+vH • Their remark that “the reading uju- [proposed by MASI] can safely be ruled out” is incorrect, in light of the new documentation. Indeed, while the middle horizontal stroke of the ja is faint, it is nonetheless visible. Cf. Nakanishi and von Hinüber 2014, p. 16. — ⟨1⟩ pāyakā ⬦ pāyaka N+vH.

⟨2⟩ savabudhapūcāya ⬦ savabudhap(u)cāya N+vH • This reading is confirmed by the next occurrence of pūcāya, for pūjāya. — ⟨2⟩ mātāpituno ⬦ mātāpituna N+vH. — ⟨2⟩ pūcāya ⬦ puyāya N+vH. — ⟨2⟩ savalokahi[ta](s)ughāya ⬦ savalokah[ita](s)ughāya N+vH.

Translation by Vincent Tournier

Success! In the 6th year of King Vāsiṭṭhīputta Siri-Sātakaṇṇi, on the 4th fortnight of the hot season, on the 5th day. A straight slab and four uprights are a pious gift [made] by the caravan leader Samaṇa (Skt. Śramaṇa?), in honour of all buddhas, in honour of his father and mother, and for the well-being and happiness of the whole world.
