Editors: Kelsey Martini, Vincent Tournier.

Identifier: DHARMA_INSKI00075.

Hand description:

Language: Middle Indo-Aryan.

Repository: Satavahana (tfb-satavahana-epigraphy).

Version: (0a2f922), last modified (aa20169).

Edition

⟨1⟩ pañcaṇha(ṃ) Arahanta⟨2⟩śatāṇaṃ Ayaṃ thūbho

Apparatus

⟨1⟩ pañcaṇha(ṃ)paceṇha G • This Gen. Pl. ending is attested in AMg, cf. Pischel § 440. As stressed by Pischel § 246, -ṇh- perhaps arose from a confusion between -ṇṇ- and -h- < -s- from the pronominal genitive plural ending in -saṃ. See also Norman 1992: 201.

⟨2⟩ Arahanta⟨2⟩śatāṇaṃ> ⬦ Arahant(ā)gratāṇaṁ G • Compare III Bhaj 11 which according to my new edition reads paṃca(n)naṁ vasibhūtasatānaṁ thū(po). The -po in III Bhaj 11 is engraved below the base-line, due to an irregularity of the stone.

Translation

This is the stūpa of the five hundred Arahants.

Commentary

Compare Gokhale’s translation: “The stupa was erected in the honour of ‘Ārya’ was the best ‘arhat’ every day.
