⟨A38⟩ bimala Tvimala N. — ⟨A38⟩ I bavaṁ _ saṁ _ _ _ satyaka, TI bavaṁ saṁ jalaṁ I satyaka ra N • Similar sequences are observed in Gulung-Gulung B11–12 I sbaṁ saṁ vimala, I srāṅan· saṁ satyaka, I madaṇḍər saṁ cakra, ryy āṅgəhan· saṁ vidya; Jeru–Jeru B2 I sbaṁ saṁ bimala, I srāṅan· saṁ satyaka I maḍaṇḍər saṁ cakra, Iy aṅgəhan· saṁ vidya and Sangguran B5–6 I sbaṁ saṁ vimala‚ I bavaṁ saṁ jalaṁ, I maḍaṇḍər· saṁ cakra, ryy āṅgəhan· saṁ tuhan·. The parallels make us expect either I bavaṁ saṁ jalaṁ, I sraṅan saṁ satyaka, or I bavaṁ saṁ jalaṁ, or I sraṅan saṁ satyaka, but what is engraved seems to satisfy none of those expectations. We are unable to confirm the segment saṁ jalaṁ from N’s reading although it is not unexpected in the light of the Sangguran paralle.

Bibliography

We used Trigangga’s edition as base text, and compared it to the editions by Nakada which only covers faces A & B and Brandes only for face A up to line 26, as well as the reading furnished by Damais (D, 1955: 56) only for the first 5 lines. (Note that Trigangga’s 2003 edition for the present charter is republished, apparently without modifications, in Hasan Djafar & Trigangga 2019). Our edition was then prepared through direct inspection of the stone at MNI by Eko Bastiawan in March 2023, benefiting from remote supervision and assistance by Arlo Griffiths.
