· <p rend="stanza" n="1">The divine one of vast power seated at ease upon a heap of ash whose pile is large <supplied reason="explanation">/whose heap comes from many [sources]?</supplied><note><foreign>vahusañcayāyām</foreign> is uncertain. Could the ash have come from many corpses? Or does it just mean that the heap is “big”? The compound <foreign>vigatāmvudeye</foreign> is odd: <foreign>ambuda</foreign> is usually cloud; <foreign>ambudeya</foreign> must be a <foreign>bahuvrīhi</foreign>: "whose gift is water". Could <foreign>bhasmarāśi</foreign> be an expression specially chosen because it can allude to some Pāśupata individual?</note> shines intensely, like the sun illuminated by its ring of rays in a sky from which all clouds have departed.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="2">Seeing whom at that time, blazing thus <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tat</foreign>?</supplied> with unbroken radiance, like a fire to which ghee has been added, <supplied reason="subaudible">and yet</supplied> without smoke, the gods themselves <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>eva</foreign></supplied>, beginning with Brahmā, Indra, and Viṣṇu on became astonished.</p>
440 <p rend="stanza" n="3">Indra, it seems <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kila</foreign></supplied>, stood then to the east, Brahmā in the south, and Moon and Sun here behind him, Nārāyaṇa on his left <supplied reason="subaudible">in the north</supplied>; he stood in the middle, with rays of blazing light, praised and bowed down to at that time by the primordial gods using their own mantras <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nijamantrakaiḥ</foreign></supplied> preceded by <foreign>OṂ</foreign> and followed by <foreign>SVADHĀ</foreign> and <foreign>SVĀHĀ</foreign>.<note>What is odd here is the use of “their own mantras”. Of course it is common to have mantras of the form <foreign>OṂ INDRĀYA SVĀHĀ</foreign>, but that would normally be used to praise Indra and not Śiva. But could the gods all have their own mantras addressed to Śiva for praising Śiva ? Also possible is that the deities are all present, each with their own mantra, and that they surround and praise Śiva:
· Indra, it seems <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>kila</foreign></supplied>, stood then to the east, Brahmā in the south, and Moon and Sun here behind him, Nārāyaṇa on his left <supplied reason="subaudible">in the north</supplied> along with their own mantras <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nijamantrakaiḥ</foreign></supplied> preceded by <foreign>OṂ</foreign> and followed by <foreign>SVADHĀ</foreign> and <foreign>SVĀHĀ</foreign>; he stood in the middle, with rays of blazing light, praised and bowed down to by the gods beginning with him <supplied reason="explanation">viz. Indra</supplied>.
· Does this reflect some iconographic programme somewhere? No sculptures were found at the temple in the twentieth century, except for two <foreign>gajasimha</foreign> at the main eastern entrance and the base of a <foreign>liṅga</foreign> at the centre of the tower.</note></p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="4">Then rising up, utterly pure, from that heap of ash, he stands in the middle of the sky, having radiance equal to that of ten million suns.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="5">For the sake of the initiation of all creatures, it seems, he gave the excellent ash that remained left over by him <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>svāvaśeṣam</foreign></supplied>, at this juncture <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>tatra</foreign></supplied>, to Brahmā <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>padmayonau</foreign></supplied>, for the sake of virtues and auspiciousness, in the assembly of the nectar-drinking <supplied reason="subaudible">gods</supplied>.<note>Note that Brahmā was situated to the south, in such a way that Śiva presented his southern aspect <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>dakṣiṇāmūrti</foreign></supplied>, so Brahmā would be in the right place to receive initiation, or initiatory ash.</note></p>
445 <p rend="stanza" n="6">By His command <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>niyogāt</foreign></supplied>, Śiva <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yaḥ</foreign></supplied> instructs <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>anuśāsti</foreign></supplied> Viṣṇu, for the sake of prosperity <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>sampadi</foreign></supplied>, that the whole earth is a place of ash <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bhasmadeśām</foreign></supplied>.<note>The feminine <foreign>bhasmadeśām</foreign> seems difficult to justify. Perhaps we must understand <foreign>anuśāsti</foreign> as a causative: he causes Viṣṇu to rule the earth. Alternatively, also assuming a causative: he instructs Viṣṇu that the whole earth is the place of <supplied reason="subaudible">nothing but</supplied> ash/ is located in the ash.
· Or: He orders <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>anuśāsti</foreign></supplied> Viṣṇu <supplied reason="subaudible">to rule ?</supplied> the whole earth, <supplied reason="subaudible">which was</supplied> the place where the ash had been <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>bhasmadeśām</foreign></supplied>.</note> He <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>yaḥ</foreign></supplied> disappeared and after that the gods beginning with Brahmā quickly returned to their own home.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="7">That same god, of supreme nature, Śrī-Īśāneśvara, <foreign>guru</foreign> of the world, revered and bowed down to by kings, along with their subjects, is ever <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>nityam</foreign></supplied> victorious in this world <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iha</foreign></supplied> for the sake of the prosperity of Campā <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>camparddhihetoḥ</foreign></supplied>.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="8">This <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>ayam</foreign></supplied> Śrī-Bhadravarman, of superlative mind <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>uttamadhīḥ</foreign></supplied>, a moon in the sky that was the lineage of Bhṛgu, the king, adorns, as it were <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>iva</foreign></supplied>, the city<supplied reason="subaudible">-state</supplied> of Campā, which operates in hundreds of ways <supplied reason="explanation">?<foreign>śatānuvr̥ttim</foreign>?</supplied>, with virtue, prosperity, ...<note>This assumes that <foreign>iveyam</foreign> is wrong for <foreign>ivāyam</foreign>. Alternatively, we could assume that the king is compared with a feminine thing. We have further guessed that <foreign>śatānavr̥ttim</foreign> is an error for <foreign>śatānuvr̥ttim</foreign>. Perhaps it is intended as a <foreign>bahuvrīhi</foreign> describing Campānagarī but intended to function adverbially: he adorned the city in such a way that it was adorned with hundreds of repetitions <supplied reason="explanation">night after night, like the moon</supplied>. It is conceivable that a grammatical joke is intended, <foreign>guṇa</foreign> and <foreign>vr̥ddhi</foreign> being technical terms of grammar.</note></p>

455 <p rend="stanza" n="2">Seeing him shine with an unbroken splendour, like a smokeless fire, nourished by clarified butter, Brahmā, Indra, Viṣṇu and other gods are filled with astonishment.</p>
· <p rend="stanza" n="3">With Indra in front, Brahma to the right, the Moon and the Sun at the back, and the god Nārāyaṇa to the left, he was sitting in the middle, glowing with splendid rays while those and other gods were bowing down before him and prasing him in his proper hymns which begin with 'Oṁ' and end with '<foreign>Svadhā-svāhā</foreign>'.</p>
