· <p n="1">Hail! Prosperity! In the 29th year <supplied reason="subaudible">of the reign</supplied> of the glorious king Rājarāja-Kesarivarman, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> Śrī-Rājarājadeva, who, <supplied reason="subaudible">in</supplied> his life of growing strength, during which,——<supplied reason="subaudible">in</supplied> the belief that, as well as the goddess of fortune, the goddess of the great earth had become his wife,——<supplied reason="subaudible">he</supplied> was pleased to destroy the ships <supplied reason="subaudible">at</supplied> Kāntaḷūr-Cālai and conquered by <supplied reason="subaudible">his</supplied> army, which was victorious in great battles, Vēṅkai-nāṭu, Kaṅka-pāṭi, Nuḷampa-pāṭi, Taṭīka-pāṭi, Kuṭamalai-nāṭu, Kollam, Kaliṅkam, Īḻa-maṇṭalam, <supplied reason="subaudible">the conquest of which</supplied> made <supplied reason="subaudible">him</supplied> famous <supplied reason="subaudible">in</supplied> the eight directions, and the seven and a half <foreign>lakṣa</foreign>s of Iraṭṭa-pāṭi,——deprived the Ceḻiyas of <supplied reason="subaudible">their</supplied> splendour at the very moment when Utak<supplied reason="undefined">ai</supplied>, which is worshipped everywhere, was <supplied reason="subaudible">most</supplied> resplendent;——we, the citizens of Mēṟpāṭi, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> Rājāśrayapuram, in Tūñāṭu, <supplied reason="subaudible">a subdivision</supplied> of Perumpāṇa-pāṭi in Jayaṅkoṇṭa-Cōḻa-maṇṭala, gave land to the god Mahādeva <supplied reason="explanation">Śiva</supplied> of the holy Aṟiñcikai-Īśvara <supplied reason="subaudible">temple</supplied>,——which the lord Śrī-Rājarājadeva had been pleased to build in our city as a resting-place <supplied reason="explanation">? <foreign>paḷḷi-paṭai</foreign></supplied> for the king who fell asleep<note>In the Appendix to Paṇḍit Cāminātaiyar's edition of the <hi rend="italic">Puṟanāṉūṟu</hi>, Mr. V. Kanakasabhai Pillai suggests that the expression <foreign>tuñciṉa</foreign> or <foreign>tuñcjiya</foreign>, ‘who slept,’ which forms part of the designations of several Cōḷa, Pāṇḍya and Cēra kings, means ‘who died.’</note> at Āṟṟūr,——for the sacred temple, for the temple enclosure,<note><foreign>ālai</foreign> is a corruption of <foreign>ālaiyam</foreign> (<foreign>ālaya</foreign> in

· <p n="2">The <supplied reason="subaudible">four</supplied> boundaries of <supplied reason="subaudible">this land are</supplied> to the west of the river called Nukā; to the north of the limit, eighty-seven rods <supplied reason="subaudible">in length</supplied>, of the high-road which, at a breadth of two rods, leads westward from the Nukā river along the northern extremity of the wasteland of the garden of the merchant <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>vyāpārin</foreign></supplied> Āccerumāṉ Vayiramēkaṉ, <supplied reason="subaudible">who resides</supplied> in the high-street of Mummaṭi-Cōḻa in this village; to the east of the street which leads up northward from this limit to Mattavāṇaccēri, <supplied reason="subaudible">the quarter</supplied> of the dancing-girls of the god of the Cōḷēndrasiṁhīśvara <supplied reason="subaudible">temple</supplied>; and to the south of the high-road which, at a breadth of four rods, leads eastward to the river called Nukā along the southern extremity of the temple garden on the south of the temple of the lord Cōḷendrasiṁhīśvara. The land enclosed within these four great boundaries, <supplied reason="subaudible">which measures</supplied> five thousand one hundred and thirty-six and a half <foreign>kuḻi</foreign>s by the rod of eighteen spans, by which our village is measured and divided, we gave to this god as tax-free temple land. The channel, a quarter rod in breadth, <supplied reason="subaudible">which flows</supplied> through this land from the river called Nukā <supplied reason="subaudible">and</supplied> supplies water to this land and to the <foreign>iluppai</foreign><note>This is the Tamil name of the tree <hi rend="italic">Bassia longifolia</hi>.</note> field of this god, shall <supplied reason="subaudible">continue to</supplied> supply water to this land and to the <foreign>iluppai</foreign> field of this god.</p>
· <p n="3">Thus we, the citizens of Mēṟpāṭi, <hi rend="italic">alias</hi> Rājāśrayapuram, having engraved <supplied reason="subaudible">this</supplied> on stone, gave <supplied reason="subaudible">this land</supplied> as tax-free temple land. At the bidding of these citizens, I, the accountant <supplied reason="explanation"><foreign>karaṇattāṉ</foreign></supplied> of this city, Nārāyaṇaṉ Aṭaikkalavaṉ, wrote <supplied reason="subaudible">this</supplied>.
